No. 35,
TO BOMBAY (Malayan Representative)
FROM S. OF S.. COLÒNIES.
Sent 21st December, 1946. 22.15 hrs.
(to India Office and Admiralty for onward
transmission)
Addressed to Malayan Representative Bombay, Repeated to Commander-in-Chief, Hong King.
Target date for the hand-over from military to civil administration in Hong Kong is lat February 1946. Considerable numbers of Hong Kong Government officers and staff for sponsored undertakings will be flown from United Kingdom during latter half of January and during February and March, There is little prospect of direct shipping from United Kingdon and numbers flown to Calcutta may exceed capacity of Calcutta-Hong Kong airlift. In addition accommodation difficulties are likely to arise in Calcutta if present Army transit facilities are not available when civil government 18 resumed and military responsibility ends,
Can you arrange for officer to be available in Calcutta to assist Hong Kong officers in transit, arrange accommodation, negotiate onward passages with Air Priorities Board, or Principal Sea Transport Officer and Ministry of War Transport representative as occasion arises, report congestion on air route and keep in close touch with Hong Kong authorities as to order of priority in which applicants for air passages are to be called forward.
